Nanotech batteries, that’s the future of battery technology. Lithium-ion batteries have reached their limits in terms of energy density. If you take gasoline and realise in some sense you have concentrated sunlight from the time of the dinosaurs. The number of joules inside a kilogram of gasoline is significantly larger than the energy content of a battery. That’s why it takes a large battery to match the equivalent energy content of gasoline.
But recent battery technology development is turning this equation on its head. Although the theory of low weight high energy density batteries have been researched and developed for over a decade, the technological endeavor needed to find a breakthrough has been difficult to achieve.
Tesla might have the answer, their technology partners Amprius have developed a nanotech batteries battery capable of matching if not surpassing the energy density of gasoline.
