This is the Mercedes Vision AMG Concept, a luxury performance electric sedan, a rival say some to the Porsche Taycan. Spoiler alert, the Vision AMG Concept is already late to the Taycan party because it should be a reality now, not three years down the production line. The problem here with the Vision AMG Concept is that it demonstrates Mercedes lacks vision. When people over at Mercedes say “Porsche Taycan rival” we say why so long in the making? Maybe Mercedes intends to perfect the all-electric architecture? wait for a battery technology breakthrough? maybe they are just lazy?

More than likely Mercedes waited to see how the Porsche Taycan performed in terms of sales. The Taycan has been a runaway success for Porsche and it appears the true power brokers over at Mercedes, the accountants, have given the green light to the corporate executives. By the time the Vision AMG Concept becomes a production reality, the Taycan will already have a generation headstart.

Nevertheless, the Vision AMG concept is a better late than never prelude. Concept cars are designed to generate a blaze of publicity, but few ever directly translate into viable production assets. It’s due to a number of factors. Time, money, production limitations, and scalability are a few reasons.

The Visions AMG Concept is a pure design study, and the future production derivative will be built on the company’s dedicated all-electric platform architecture. The Vision AMG Concept will be a four-door sedan (saloon) with a rear hatch opening.

It will be slightly longer than the Porsche Taycan, because Mercedes want something to positively boast about in future marketing brochures. However, the extra length may well be less of a boast and more technical because it could allow Mercedes to fit a larger battery pack.

As for the sleek shape, it may provide a beneficial aerodynamic boost, therefore, extending the electric range. Mercedes is working on a new high-performance electric motor, which is kind of like the equivalent to the old school V8-Bi-Turbo, but significantly more powerful.

Despite all the showboating and boasting Mercedes remain tight-lipped about the performance and range stats. Pricing should be similar to the Porsche Taycan.
