The entity known as SsangYong Motor Company, has undergone a transformation, emerging under a new brand identity—KGM Motors. In the last few years, KGM Motors, formerly known as SsangYong, was a going concern and at one stage was acquired by SAIC Motor, then Mahindra & Mahindra, and ultimately by the KG Group in 2022. KG Group, a South Korean mega-conglomerate, boasts a diverse portfolio spanning various industries, encompassing media, services, steel, and chemical sectors.
In 2023, SsangYong underwent a rebranding process, emerging as KGM Motors to reflect the change of ownership status. Despite the new nomenclature, SsangYong’s engineering and production legacy endures. While the company had relied on Mercedes engine technology for an extended period, reports suggest that their latest generation of engines is now designed and developed in-house.
With a new brand identity comes great responsibility, in the UK the company has revised the model line-up as part of its recent corporate rebrand. The Musso pick-up retains its EX, Rebel, Saracen, and Saracen variant names. Other models now embrace a unified alpha / numeric nomenclature, K20, K30, K40 and K50 variants.
Meanwhile, KGM is currently developing two new SUVs and pick-ups that will utilise BEV-dedicated platforms in partnership with BYD. Also confirmed is the UK launch of all-new Torres ICE and Torres EVX in early in 2024.
