We tried to pun the hell out of the headline but even we can’t make sense of it. The headline aims to frame the debate about the growing threat posed by Chinese automotive manufacturers encroaching on sales territories traditionally dominated by established “legacy” car brands. To counter this perceived threat, America has raised tariffs on Chinese goods, specifically targeting Chinese-made cars. However, the real threat comes from ignoring the threat and hoping it goes away.

China is now producing better and cheaper cars than its European and American competitors, a significant change from a decade ago. Today, China has substantially improved the quality and cadence of its automotive manufacturing capabilities. The BYD Shark PHEV exemplifies the advanced state of China’s automotive industry.

One of the unique selling points of the BYD Shark is the integrated Karaoke function accessed via the 12.8-inch infotainment system, which also integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I am sure most people will not spend $50k on a pick up explicitly for its Karaoke functionality.

The BYD Shark is powered by a 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors, providing all-wheel drive and 429 bhp. It features the Blade battery with a capacity of 29.58 kWh, utilizing cell-to-chassis technology. The electric-only range is claimed to be around 62 miles.

The 0-62 mph acceleration time is claimed to be 5.7 seconds, and the fuel consumption is claimed to be 7.5 L/100 km (13.3 km/l; 31.4 mpg-US). It has a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,510 lb), an 835 kg (1,840 lb) payload, and a 1,450 L (51 cu ft) cargo volume.

The Mexican market BYD Shark will be available in two trim levels, GL and GS, with prices starting at $53,000, which is at least $2,000 cheaper than the less advanced entry-level Chevrolet Colorado.
