Porsche Halts Cayman and Boxster Production at Osnabrück Plant
Industry News

Porsche has announced plans to relocate production of its Cayman and Boxster models from the Osnabrück plant in Germany to its main facility in Zuffenhausen by Easter 2026. This decision raises concerns about the future of the Osnabrück automotive manufacturing plant, which has been facing challenges due to declining demand and broader issues within the Volkswagen Group.

The Osnabrück plant, with a capacity of 100,000 vehicles annually, produced only 28,000 units last year. In addition to the Cayman and Boxster, it currently manufactures the VW T-Roc Cabriolet, which is set to cease production next year, further impacting the plant’s output.

Porsche cites a decline in demand for sports cars in China as a major factor driving the production shift. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is grappling with slowing vehicle sales and the financial burden of transitioning to electric vehicles, leading to its second profit warning in three months.

Acquired by Volkswagen in 2009, the historic Osnabrück factory, which once produced the iconic VW Karmann Ghia, now faces an uncertain future as the automotive industry evolves towards electric vehicle production and optimization.
