We are very close to declaring all-out war with Tesla after closely monitoring Elon Musk’s transition into the world of politics. We’re primarily interested in the product and the engineering, and in future innovation. While big industries will always be linked to government—whether through regulation or funding support—for industrialists to become involved in politics is to step into the furnace of public scrutiny.
An executive like Elon Musk can hide behind the security wall of carefully crafted PR in his day-to-day management of Tesla and SpaceX. But in politics, he is on a hiding to nothing; every move, every word is scrutinized because he is in the spotlight more often than he’d like.
Evidently, Musk seems to bask in the spotlight of publicity and notoriety. The infamous—and so-called—Nazi salute made during a speech has damaged Tesla’s sales and caused shares to plummet.
But should Tesla employees be blamed for the actions of an individual who is clearly an introverted geek with awkward social manners? While we strongly disapprove of Musk’s foray into politics and his political views in general, we are refraining from a full-out war with Tesla.
When I say “war,” I don’t mean mindless vandalism—I mean a war of words and ideas. But for now, Sandy Munro, a part-time Tesla cheerleader, gets to drill the lead Tesla engineer and designer about the upgraded Model Y and Cybertcab.
