The £15,000 Desk Ornament That Thinks It’s A Hypercar
Auto News

I wonder whether an Amalgam Collection model car depreciates, given that the UK-based company produces highly detailed and accurate models costing £15,000 or more — as much as a new car or a used 2017 Tesla Model S. While owning a full-size car is arguably more practical, owning a McLaren W1 isn’t, except for the one percent of the one percent who can afford to do so.

And so Amalgam Collection makes the supercar experience that much more attainable for affluent buyers who can afford a £100,000 car but whose budgets can’t stretch to a £2 million hypercar.

And this is it, the Amalgam Collection 1:8 scale replica of the new McLaren W1 — in true McLaren fashion, it’s been engineered within an inch of its microscopic life. Developed alongside McLaren Automotive using the real car’s CAD data, paint codes and material specs, this isn’t so much a model as it is a shrunken hypercar that accidentally fell in the wash.

It’s big, too — over 57cm long — and each one takes more than 300 hours of careful hand assembly after a frankly heroic 3,000-hour development process. The details are properly nerdy: working scissor doors, a remote-controlled rear wing, and an interior that looks ready for a driver who is approximately the size of a moderately ambitious hamster.

Why does this exist? Because the real W1 will be limited to just 399 cars worldwide, each costing roughly the GDP of a small village (about £2 million). Increasingly, collectors want an exact miniature twin to sit in a glass case and whisper, “Yes, I made excellent financial decisions.”

The W1 now joins the hallowed ‘1’ car dynasty alongside the mighty McLaren F1 and the hybrid poster child McLaren P1 — both of which have aged about as badly as fine wine stored in a cryogenic vault. Translation: they’ve gone up. A lot.

If you fancy one:

Launch spec (Papaya Spark): limited to 199 pieces, from £14,995

Tailor Made version: built to match your actual W1 spec, from £20,995

In short: if you’ve bought the W1, you can now buy the W1’s emotional support W1. And if you haven’t… well, there’s always the model.
