An Icon In Peril: Maserati Turns to China And Huawei For An Electric Revival
Auto News

Maserati is looking east for its next chapter, with a reported partnership involving Huawei and JAC Motors set to transform the struggling Italian luxury marque.

Maserati is reportedly preparing two new electric vehicles as part of an ambitious collaboration with Chinese technology giant Huawei and JAC Motors.

Industry sources cited by Future Cars Daily say the partnership will produce a mid-to-large electric SUV and a large electric GT, with the GT currently expected to become the first model launched under the collaboration.

The strategy would combine three very different strengths. Huawei would provide its intelligent-car technology, including its Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance platform, advanced driver-assistance systems and electric-drive technology.

JAC would handle engineering and manufacturing, while Maserati would bring its distinctive Italian design, heritage and established international sales network.

The proposed arrangement could be particularly significant because the cars would follow a dual-brand strategy. In China, they would reportedly be sold under Huawei-backed Maextro branding, while international versions would carry the Maserati badge.

Production would also span two continents. JAC would reportedly manufacture the vehicles’ unpainted bodies in Hefei before shipping them to Italy, where Maserati would complete final assembly, install the luxury interiors and calibrate the chassis.

The move comes at a critical moment for Maserati.

The Italian marque reportedly delivered fewer than 8,000 vehicles globally in 2025, an 80% decline from its 2017 peak. It also recorded an adjusted operating loss of €198 million.

For Maserati, this is about more than adding electric models to its range. The company needs technology, investment and manufacturing scale without losing the identity that made the Trident badge famous.

The reported partnership could provide all three.

With Italy, China and Huawei technology coming together, Maserati is attempting something increasingly common in the modern automotive industry: preserving a historic European luxury name by embracing the capabilities of the Chinese automotive revolution.
