Porsche’s New Supercar Won’t Go Fully Electric Because Nobody Wants One
Auto News

Porsche is making a rather refreshing decision in an industry seemingly determined to turn everything into an electric appliance: its new supercar won’t be available as a pure EV.

The mid-engined machine, which will sit above the 911, is being developed on the platform underpinning the Mission S. According to Porsche CEO Michael Leiters, there simply isn’t enough demand for a fully electric powertrain in this particular corner of the market.

“There won’t be a BEV on that platform because there is no demand, in this segment, for an EV there,” he explained. And that’s about as subtle as a flat-six at full chat.

The platform will support petrol engines, conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids, giving Porsche plenty of options when deciding how best to propel its new flagship. What it won’t accommodate is a battery-only version.

That’s quite a statement from a company already selling the Taycan and electric Macan, with the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman also on the way.

Apparently, convincing someone to buy an electric family SUV is one thing; persuading a supercar enthusiast to abandon combustion is quite another.

Porsche isn’t the only manufacturer reaching that conclusion. Lamborghini has reconsidered its all-electric Lanzador plans, while Pagani abandoned its electric Utopia project after customers showed little interest.

So, the electric revolution continues – just not everywhere. And if Porsche’s customers have their way, its next supercar will still have something burning behind the driver.
