Tesla has unveiled a six-seat version of its best-selling Model Y SUV in China, priced from ¥339,000 ($47,200), directly targeting middle-class families in the country’s fiercely competitive EV market. The Model Y L stretches 150mm longer than the standard Model Y to accommodate a third row and delivers a range of 751 km (467 miles), nearly matching the performance version of the five-seat variant.
Little was known about the interior seating arrangement; however, images purportedly showing the Model Y L’s cabin were recently leaked on Reddit. Chinese car reviewers have already posted videos of the new Model Y L on youtube.
Its pricing positions it squarely against domestic rivals like Li Auto’s L8 and the Huawei-backed Aito M8.
Launched in 2020, the Model Y became the world’s best-selling car in 2023, yet Tesla has been losing ground in China, with Shanghai factory shipments declining and local deliveries dropping 12% year-on-year in July.
The new Model Y L stretches approximately 180mm (7 inches) longer and rises 24mm (around 1 inch) taller than the standard model. The new six-seater is expected to reach customers as early as September, as Tesla seeks to reclaim momentum in the world’s largest EV market.
