The New Mercedes-Maybach GLS Is The Definition of Unnecessary Luxury
Auto News

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS has always answered a question nobody asked: “What if an S-Class was too common?” Now, for 2026, Mercedes has doubled down on excess, polishing its flagship SUV until it positively glows. Literally.

The most obvious change is the new illuminated Maybach grille, complete with glowing MAYBACH lettering. Because apparently a regular chrome grille no longer announces your arrival loudly enough. In some markets, even the bonnet mascot lights up, ensuring your neighbours know you’ve arrived home before you’ve even turned into the driveway.

It’s not all theatre, though. Under the bonnet sits an updated electrified 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 450kW and 850Nm, helped by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Mercedes says it delivers smoother power, sharper throttle response and V12 levels of refinement without actually needing a V12.

The suspension has also had the Maybach treatment. AIRMATIC now works with cloud-based road data to prepare for bumps before you reach them, while E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL adjusts itself 1,000 times every second. It can even lean into corners by three degrees, because spilling champagne in the back simply isn’t acceptable.

Inside, it’s exactly as lavish as you’d expect. There’s a new MBUX Superscreen with Maybach-specific graphics, fresh leather and wood trims, upgraded Burmester audio and massage seats that now knead your calves as well as your back. If that isn’t enough pampering, a new air filtration system keeps the cabin air cleaner than most operating theatres.

The tech hasn’t been ignored either. Mercedes’ latest operating system integrates ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Bing Search into the voice assistant, while Level 2 assisted driving is coming to selected markets.

Perhaps the cleverest feature, however, is almost invisible. The optional 23-inch forged wheels feature centre caps that remain perfectly upright while driving. Completely unnecessary? Absolutely. Brilliant? Also yes. Because that’s exactly what a Maybach is all about.
