The future of commuting may not involve building bigger roads. It may involve abandoning them altogether.
Archer Aviation has taken another step toward that reality with a piloted round-trip flight between Salinas Municipal Airport and Monterey Regional Airport in California. The aircraft leading the charge is the all-electric Midnight eVTOL — a machine designed to turn slow regional journeys into quick trips through the sky.
Each flight leg lasted around nine minutes. The same journey by car can take more than 35 minutes, depending on traffic. That is precisely the type of short urban and regional route Archer believes electric air taxis could transform.
The Midnight is built around practicality rather than science fiction. Its 142 kWh battery system uses six independent 800-volt lithium-ion battery packs integrated into the aircraft’s wings. Instead of relying on experimental next-generation chemistry, Archer has chosen proven battery technology adapted from the electric vehicle industry — prioritising reliability, safety, and real-world operation.
That focus on everyday usability extends to turnaround times. The Midnight is engineered for repeated short flights of around 20 miles, with passengers boarding while the aircraft quickly prepares for its next journey. Using high-power chargers, the battery can be replenished in roughly 10 to 12 minutes, helping minimise downtime between flights.
The California demonstration, conducted with coordination from the Federal Aviation Administration under the White House’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, was less about showing that the aircraft could fly and more about proving it could become a genuine transport service.
Archer’s vision is simple: replace frustrating road journeys with quiet, efficient electric flights. The challenge now is turning that vision into something passengers can actually book, trust, and use every day.
