Slip Sliding Away: Nurburgring Fail Compilation
Video

I’ve never really warmed to the Nürburgring. I appreciate its history and the sheer challenge it presents, but as a driving experience, I find it can feel more like a succession of braking zones than a circuit with any real rhythm.

Its narrow sections, relentless length and limited margin for error make it difficult to build the kind of flowing, connected experience I look for in a track. Rather than rewarding a consistent rhythm, it can feel like an endurance test for both driver and machine, with the brakes, tyres and concentration all pushed to their limits.

That doesn’t mean I can’t understand the appeal. The Nürburgring is an extraordinary place, and its combination of elevation changes, blind crests and constantly changing corners demands a level of commitment and respect few other circuits can match.

But those same characteristics can make it an unforgiving environment, particularly for drivers who underestimate the challenge or arrive in cars that are expensive to repair.

That’s partly why we haven’t covered Nürburgring crash compilations. The prospect of someone crashing their pride and joy is hardly a new story; the financial and emotional consequences were much the same 10 or 20 years ago as they are today.

What has changed is the potential cost of modern performance cars and the ease with which these incidents can be filmed and shared.

Yet, as long as there are enthusiastic owners keen to test themselves and their cars, the Nürburgring will remain something of a Venus flytrap: irresistible in its promise, but capable of punishing those who get it wrong.
