Ferrari Stuns With 488 GTB Spider
Auto News
Here it finally is, the open top version of the 488 GTB, the 488 Spider. It uses the exact same mechanical setup as the Coupe GTB a 3.9-litre, twin-turbo 660bhp V8 which allows the Spider to charge from 0-62mph in just 3 seconds. Ferrari say its the most powerful Spider ever we say the top speed is sure to be stylish. As with the previous generation the 488 Spider comes with a retractable roof which folds away in 14 seconds and is actually 25kgs lighter than a fabric roof. All in the 488 Spider weighs just 50kg more than the coupe. Ferrari-488-GTB-Spider-Profile Chopping off the roof is great for the ‘vain and the glorious’ but it isn’t so great for the torsional rigidity because the roof of any car is part of the structure. That’s not the case for the 488 Spider its actually as ridged as the coupe thanks to the use of exotic light weight alloys that have been used to brace the internal structure. Ferrari-488-GTB-Spider-Rear-With-Roof-Up Ferrari has also worked on optimising the aerodynamics which is designed to reduce downforce whilst reducing drag at the same time. A blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators ‘push’ the Ferrari securely into the ground at high speed. To reduce buffeting when the roof is down the electric glass rear wind stop can be adjusted to one of three positions just so you can experience the sound of the 488 GTB’s engine uninterrupted. Ferrari-488-GTB-Spider-Interior The 488 GTB Spider can accelerate 12% faster than its 458 Spider predecessor, Ferrari have upgraded the mechanical and electronic software that integrates with the SSC2 Side Slip Angle Control System. What Ferrari want you to know is that if you have the disposable income to buy one of these supercars then it is better than its 458 predecessor in every way, but it was never going to be worse was it? Ferrari-488-GTB-Spider-Rear The 488 GTB Spider will debut at the Frankfurt Motorshow, yes its going to be expensive but have any Ferrari s ever been cheap?
