Our long-termer VW Tiguan is bloody awful, straight down the middle-class, middle of the road awful. But the Touareg we do like, and so does German tuning house, ABT, who have pumped up the power of the Touareg’s 4.0-litre V8 TDi, that’s the turbo-diesel engine folks. That particular engine already produces a loud and proud 422bhp and 900 nm of torque. Arise ABT Touareg.

Turns out you don’t need a bottle of nitrous-oxide to extract gargantuan amounts of BHP for short instant accelerative thrills these days. All you require is a laptop and a healthy amount of nerdism. That laptop and ABT nerd is able to extract 78bhp more from the Toureg’s already mighty V8 TDi courtesy of an engine software re-map.

In basic terms, it literally means ABT will hack into the Touregs on-board computer and demand it releases the extra 78bhp. Doing so brings the total power up to 500bhp and 970Nm torque. ABT has created a unique to the Touareg exterior styling kit which includes ABT 22-inch alloy wheels.

The tuning house also offers a full bespoke re-trim of the interior which includes an Alcantara wrapped dashboard, door panels, seats, console and more besides. And ABT will even throw in a few stitched logos for free. All of this isn’t free and will cost what many people refer to as… money.

ABT has also re-mapped the V6 TDi which now produces 330bhp and 650 Nm torque. The ABT Touareg will be available to order from January 2020.
