Despite being a fully electric brand, Lucid’s upcoming midsize crossover has sparked some debate with its latest teaser image, said to be a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y. The model, unveiled at a special event in Arizona, is set to ride on a new midsize platform and position itself below the Gravity. While Lucid remains tight-lipped about the specifics, the crossover’s curvaceous yet bulky design has raised eyebrows.
The electric startup has confirmed that its midsize platform will enter production in late 2026, with vehicles starting at under $50,000. Earlier this year, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson hinted at potential rivalry with the Rivian R2, announcing that production for these midsize models would take place in Saudi Arabia at the AMP-2 facility.
In addition to the new crossover, Lucid also announced its next-generation Atlas drive unit. This unit, currently under development, will power the company’s midsize vehicles and promises “enhanced value” for both Lucid and its customers.
While details are scarce, Lucid has stated that the drive unit is miniaturized and more efficient, potentially allowing for smaller battery packs and reduced costs compared to competitors.
Their proprietary software stack is said to maximize the potential of these advanced drive units, offering features like torque vectoring, traction control, and battery management.
Finally, Lucid revealed that the Gravity will be equipped with a NACS port in 2025, granting access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without the need for an adapter.
