An Irish Goodbye: Volkswagen Bids Farewell To The Touareg
Auto News

Volkswagen has decided it’s time to tug at our heartstrings—or at least give it a good try—by releasing two “last hurrah” models: the Touareg FINAL EDITION and Touareg R FINAL EDITION. They go on sale 11 December, marking the beginning of the end for the combustion-engine Touareg in the UK. Yes, after 23 years, VW is finally admitting that even the Toureg can’t outrun electrification forever.

Since 2002, the Touareg has been the quietly competent ghost of the SUV world: rugged enough to climb a mountain, posh enough to park at a country club, and understated enough that only other Touareg drivers would nod in appreciation.

And now, to honour this lack of charisma, Volkswagen has gifted it some engraved lettering, illuminated trim, and a pricetag that somehow manages to be lower despite having more equipment. Miracles do happen.

The Touareg FINAL EDITION, with its 286 PS 3.0 TDI, shows up at £72,535, almost apologetically undercutting the old Black Edition.

The Touareg R FINAL EDITION brings 462 PS of eHybrid enthusiasm for £81,455, again cheaper than the model it replaces—because nothing says “we’ll miss you” like a discount.

Both models retain 4MOTION all-wheel drive and Volkswagen’s eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox, just in case anyone feels like sending the Touareg out in the blaze of glory it always quietly deserved.

So yes, the combustion-powered Touareg is bowing out. And in true Touareg fashion, it’s doing so subtly, politely and without any fanfare. Even Volkswagen’s PR decided that a single photo would suffice—a sign that, for them, Touareg was spirited away many years ago.
