Imagine a very successful executive. Tailored suit, corner office, probably owns a vineyard he never visits. He hits his mid-life crisis… and instead of buying a motorbike, he redesigns his entire personality.

That, in essence, is what’s happened to the BMW 7 Series.

On paper, this is just a facelift. A nip here, a tuck there. But in reality, BMW has gone full existential rethink. The 7-Series hasn’t changed its bones—it’s still on the old CLAR platform—but it’s now desperately trying to convince you it’s young, relevant, and very into “Neue Klasse” energy.

Visually, it’s like our executive has swapped his conservative tie for something… experimental. The grille still dominates, but now it glows and has been subtly reshaped, like he’s discovered mood lighting. The headlights? Split, slimmer, slightly hidden. It’s not exactly prettier, but it does have presence. Like a man who’s just started saying “curated” a lot.

Inside is where the crisis really kicks in. Suddenly, there are screens everywhere. A massive new Panoramic iDrive setup stretches across the cabin.

Then there’s a passenger display for your long-suffering plus-one, and in the back, a 31-inch Theatre Screen that now does Zoom calls—because apparently even your commute needs to feel like a TED Talk.

Underneath all this, there’s a brain transplant. New electrical architecture, vastly more computing power, smarter voice assistant—this is the executive downloading productivity apps at 3am, convinced it’s a personality upgrade. The electric versions get better batteries, more range, faster charging. Objectively impressive. Slightly desperate.

And then, the twist: despite all this tech bravado, BMW has quietly dropped Level 3 autonomy. That bold, future-facing promise? Gone.

Replaced with a very sensible, very cautious Level 2 system. Which is basically the automotive equivalent of saying, “Actually, I’ll just go to the gym and eat better.”

So yes, the upgraded 7-Series is faster, smarter, and more capable than ever.

But more importantly, it’s trying—very hard—to prove it’s still got it.
