It may seem unassuming, but the MG4 is a trailblazer, marking the first production car to feature the holy grail of battery technology, the solid-state battery.
SAIC MG has delivered the first customer MG4 equipped with a semi-solid-state battery in China, marking a milestone as the first mass-produced electric vehicle using this technology at a mainstream price.
The MG4 comes in five trims, with prices ranging from 68,800 yuan ($9,800) to 102,800 yuan ($14,500) for the semi-solid-state “Secure” edition.
The MG4’s The MG4’s entry-level trims use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 437 km (271 miles).
The Secure edition features a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, prioritizing safety and long-term durability over range.
Range tops out at 530 km (330 miles) for the Smart and Secure trims. The semi-solid battery contains only 5% liquid electrolyte, dramatically cutting fire risk, during industry safety test cycles.
All MG4 models share a 120 kW front-mounted motor, power is rated at 161bhp and 250Nm torque. The fast-charging capability takes 30–80% in 20 minutes, and compact hatchback dimensions are similar to competitors like the BYD Dolphin.
Inside, tech features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and screens up to 15.6 inches. The semi-solid-state battery contains just 5% liquid electrolyte, dramatically reducing fire risk and exceeded industry safety standards in needle penetration tests.
The MG4 is already performing well in the market, with over 13,000 units delivered in November 2025.
