Aston Martin DB11 And The Vanquished Cool
Worst Car of the Week
This is perhaps the most difficult of all WCOTWs ever written. I do so under duress that is to say under the strain of self loathing. Never did I imagine for one moment that an Aston Martin of any description would end up being the worst car of any week, because it really isn’t. It shouldn’t be… but it has come to pass. And as I prepare to spill my bile I am also preparing to place a paper bag over my head. And this time there will be no holes cut out for the eyes because this is the most shameful moment in the history of WCOTW. I’ll get straight to the point, I don’t like the new Aston Martin DB11, I mean I don’t like 10 percent of it. And let me tell you why. First of all I looked back at Aston Martin’s history and the amount of stylish glory cars this little company has made over the years makes you proud to be British. Even if you are not. You see this is all about the style and in my opinion Aston haven’t made a bad looking car since 1948. Every Aston Martin ever made was styled for it’s time, for it’s era. We’ll forget about the Cygnet which was nothing more than a technical appeasement. As I digress let me tell you this about the Cygnet. If you ever visited Aston’s HQ in Gaydon, Warwickshire just off the Junction 22 on the M40 you would not have seen the Cygnet on centre display. They hid it round the corner of the entrance lobby behind a huge, towering plant pot. Back to the point in question. In some peoples opinion Aston may not be the most technically sophisticated of modern day supercars. But even if that were true the style always shone brightly through the good and bad years. The DB11 is very sophisticated, it’s got the latest driving mode technology and variable dampers and it’s just technically brilliant all round. It has the power, a 600bhp twin turbo V12 means the DB11 will live with the best of the contemporary supercar elites. And the DB11 offers plenty of style. However unlike any Aston Martin before it I can only like 90 percent of it. Every Aston Martin should have a total adherence to style however the DB11 has sacrificed it’s servitude to style for the sake of a clever aerodynamic solution. The so called rear virtual wing is a truly innovative idea, but it belongs on a race track not on a supercar and certainly not on an Aston Martin supercar. It’s more than OK for a Neesan GTR though. And it’s that virtual wing that has ‘de-styled’ the rear of DB11 and that’s why I just can’t like it enough in the same way I liked the DB9 or the V8 Zagato or the DB2. Sacrificing style for innovation is never a good idea and it’s an extremely bad idea if you are the coolest brand of them all. And that’s why you Aston Martin DB11 are the worst car of the week. But let me finish on this note, I am an ugly individual, I don’t even have a face for radio. However if you offered me a choice between plastic surgery and the DB11 I would take the DB11 any day of the week. That’s kind of like a compliment.  Aston-Martin-DB11-Uncool
