Freelander 8: Land Rover Didn’t Want To Build So China Did
Auto News

Land Rover’s Freelander name has been dug up, dusted off, and bolted onto something very 2026 indeed — the Freelander 8. And it’s not so much a soft-roader comeback as it is a full-on tech-laden brick of ambition.

Unveiled via China’s MIIT filings after its Beijing Auto Show debut, the Freelander 8 is described—rather boldly—as a “luxury tech all-terrain SUV.” Which is a polite way of saying: it’s big, boxy, and packed with enough technology to make a small space agency nervous.

Underneath, it rides on an 800V extended-range electric (EREV) platform, meaning it’s part electric, part petrol generator, and all very complicated. It uses a CATL-developed battery with absurd charging claims—350kW peak charging and a 6C discharge rate—which is engineering speak for “this thing gulps electricity like it’s free.”

Visually, it leans hard into “brute SUV”: straight lines, upright stance, and a closed-off front end that looks like it’s been designed by someone who has never heard of aerodynamics and simply doesn’t care.

Up top, there’s LiDAR—because of course there is—and it runs Huawei’s Qiankun ADS V4.1 driver assistance system. Translation: it will try very hard to drive itself, while you sit there wondering when it all became this complicated. Inside, it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8397 chip, meaning the infotainment system is probably more powerful than your first laptop, your current laptop, and possibly your toaster.

It’s also enormous. At just under 3 tonnes, it’s less “SUV” and more “small moving building,” and it sits right on the edge of needing special licensing rules in some regions.

And yet, this is all part of a bigger push. Freelander sales in China have been modest, so this is the reset button: old name, new tech, maximum ambition, and a strong hint that subtlety has left the building entirely.

In short: it’s a Freelander. But not as you remember it.
