Max Verstappen rebuffed speculation surrounding his Formula 1 future after a disappointing British Grand Prix left him potentially able to activate a reported Red Bull exit clause at the end of the season.
It has been widely reported that Verstappen’s contract includes a performance-related clause that could allow him to leave Red Bull if he is outside the top two in the Drivers’ Championship at the summer break. Following Silverstone, the four-time world champion sits seventh in the standings, 78 points behind the leader, with only a limited number of points still available before the break.
Once the dominant force in Formula 1, Red Bull’s fortunes have declined since early 2024. The team has faced internal turbulence, including the controversy surrounding former team principal Christian Horner, while Verstappen’s camp—led by his father Jos—has previously warned that the team’s struggles could mark the beginning of the end of its championship era.
After winning four consecutive Drivers’ titles with Red Bull from 2021, Verstappen has seen the team lose its grip on the sport. McLaren claimed the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, while Verstappen surrendered the Drivers’ crown in 2025. This season, he has collected just two podium finishes from nine races.
The frustration was clear at the British Grand Prix. After qualifying eight-tenths of a second away from pole position, Verstappen wanted to make significant changes to his car and start from the pit lane, but Red Bull chose a different approach.
“I wanted to start from the pit lane,” Verstappen said. “They were maybe confident to fix it. I was not.”
His race later ended in dramatic fashion when he spun with only a few laps remaining after a rear-wing system issue prevented the car from behaving as expected. Verstappen described the incident as:
“Super dangerous.”
Despite mounting questions over whether he feels his concerns are being ignored by Red Bull, Verstappen refused to reveal his thoughts on the team’s future or his own plans.
“I’m not going to say anything about that,” he told reporters at Silverstone.
With Red Bull’s competitive advantage fading and rival teams watching closely, Verstappen’s next decision could become one of the defining moments of the current Formula 1 era.
